The Illinois School for the Deaf is an integral part of the statewide continuum of services for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

We serve students ages 3 to 21, from preschool through the 12th grade, and we also have a
program designed specifically for infants and toddlers in the surrounding area who are deaf or hard of hearing. If your High School student determines that he or she would benefit from additional coursework or vocational training and elects to postpone receiving a diploma, we have a transitional program designed to meet those needs.

Why ISD

-Comprehensive on-campus services: nursing, audiology, counseling, speech-language therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy

-Highly qualified, certified deaf educators

-Inclusive educational option to mainstream classes in Jacksonville public schools

-Student Work Experience Program prepares students for future employment

-Transition Living Program empowers students to live independently

First Steps of the Enrollment Process

Families, school districts, local education agencies and ISD work together to help determine if ISD is right for a child.

All children who are deaf or hard of hearing have the right to an education where their unique communication mode is respected, utilized, and developed to an appropriate level of proficiency as compared to that of students of similar ages who are hearing.
